EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

We begin with a visit to Tipón, an impressive Inca complex known for its advanced hydraulic system and beautiful agricultural terraces. Next, we head to Pikillaqta, a pre-Incan city built by the Wari culture, where you’ll learn about its history and planned architecture.

We continue to the towns of Oropesa, Huaro, and Andahuaylillas, home to beautiful colonial churches. The highlight of the tour is the Church of Andahuaylillas, often called the Sistine Chapel of the Americas for its stunning frescoes and Baroque religious art. Along the way, we’ll also pass by Huacarpay Lagoon, a natural sanctuary home to Andean birds and picturesque views.

Day 1:  Cusco – Tipón – Pikillaqta – Andahuaylillas – Cusco

• Hotel pick-up between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m.
• We drive for about 40 minutes to the Tipón archaeological complex.
• Guided tour and Q&A session at Tipón, followed by a visit to a local town where we’ll try the delicious traditional bread.
• We continue to the Pikillaqta archaeological site.
• We finish at the town of Andahuaylillas to visit the famous church, known as the “Sistine Chapel of Latin America.”
• Return to Cusco between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m.

In keeping with the nature of an expedition, we keep our schedule flexible to take advantage of the unexpected, adapting our course to the conditions and opportunities that arise. Your expedition experience can be tailored to the activity level you choose, whether it’s light or moderate or a little of both. Travelers should be in good health, comfortable walking or standing for extended periods of time, and able to get in and out of expedition landing craft. Daily activities, walking tours, and visits to cultural or historic sites, with options most days for more physical activities such as longer hikes . All departures are family friendly.
